Apart from suitable methodologies, considered practices and good teaching ideas, online teaching and learning at home also depends – or at least may be significantly improved – by appropriate hardware setups at both ends – the instructor side and the student side.

Despite all best efforts, some areas in the visual arts ultimately cannot work entirely online. Especially disciplines based on a notion of manual craft that articulates primarily in skillful manipulation of materials – ceramics, glass, sculpture, maybe jewellery, fashion etc. – will eventually always want to incorporate a minimal proportion of analogue technique.

Initially Jamboard was a piece of hardware, an interactive whiteboard, essentially a huge touchscreen on a stand that collaborators could log onto via a dedicated app. Since its inception in 2017, the Jamboard app now may also stand alone, i.e. collaborators may directly connect and work with each other without the hardware.
