Media Arts: Tools and Resources

All of the following tools and resources for Media Arts are available online, most of them for free – though sometimes with limitations (e.g. time, number of downloads etc.).

AnimatorDV (Stop Motion)
AnimatorDV is a free stop motion software for Windows only; its paid version with more functionalities is AnimatorHD.

Blender (CGI/3D Modeling)
Blender for years has been a secret weapon in the CGI world for low budget productions that cannot afford the high end licenses of competing CGI softwares.

DaVinci Resolve (Video Editor, VFX, Audio)
Davinci Resolve offers a broad palette of tools for video editing, visual effects, motion graphics, colour correction and audio post production.

Green Screen (Video Editor)
Green Screen is an iOS video editing app that integrates a green screen function. May be especially of interest for students with very little equipment options.

InShot (Video Editor)
A video editor for mobile devices, to trim & cut video/movie, blur background and no crop, add music and video effects.

KDENlive (Video Editor)
KDENlive is an open source, complete video editor for Linux; beta versions are also available for Windows and Mac. It provides all the general functions to be expected from a video editor, but is especially praised its multi-track editing with a timeline and its supports for unlimited number of videos and sound track.

MonkeyJam (Stop Motion)
MonkeyJam is a digital penciltest and stopmotion animation programme designed to capture images from a webcam, camcorder, or scanner and assemble them as separate frames of an animation.

OpenShot (Video Editor)
OpenShot is a free video editor for Windows, Mac or Linux. The interface is pretty basic but offers everything needed from the standpoint of a video editing app.

Pencil2D (Stop Motion)
Software for creating 2D hand drawn animations.

Shotcut (Video Editor)
Shotcut is a free and open-source cross-platform video editor, especially useful for beginners or occasional users. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of more expensive programmes but it does plenty enough to realise most “normal” projects.

Stop Motion Studio (Stop Motion)
Stop Motion Studio provides a host of features (frame-by-frame editor, never-get-lost-timeline, sound editor) for stopmotion animation on mobile devices.
